Simon Patten - the intimate and gory details!

Gawd, you must be desperately bored or incredibly curious to have got this far... ! :-)

So, whaddya wanna know? I'm 45 physically / 25 mentally / 105 emotionally, 5' 6" short, left handed, somewhat hard of hearing, Virgo and divorced with two children (pic about 2 years old) - Rebecca aged 7 and Adam aged 6 (who for various reasons I don't see at the moment). I live alone in a flat in Redland (Bristol), I love to listen to music (virtually anything except C&W, Opera or Indie), mess around with computers, go out dancing (usually Rave but sometimes jiving to Rock & Roll), read stuff like Carlos Castenada/Asimov/books about Buddhism/etc., sit around thinking about the meaning of life, the universe and everything and watch loads of Star Trek!

I'm a computer engineer by trade, having worked on mini and mainframe computers and peripherals since 1978. They were great years to have experienced in a young and flourishing industry - training courses around the world, money no object for anything... very exciting! However by the early 90's most of these machines were being replaced by desktop computers, the peripherals were just swopped out rather than repaired so yours truly found himself redundant - very literally! Since then I've kept my hand in by helping friends with setting up and maintaining computer systems, keeping abreast of the latest hardware and software, etc. but have been exploring other avenues too (i.e. not working).

My interest in comms started back in the mid 80's when I used to call Bulletin Boards on a trusty old 300 baud acoustic coupler modem and BBC Micro. I became very interested in it all and opened my own BBS in 1990 called 'Transworld' which quickly grew to 3 lines and 120 calls a day! Transworld is still running but after my divorce I passed it on to a friend to keep going rather than shut it down and it has since been passed on again! It's nice to see it still running though and lovely that people are still interested in keeping it going. More recently I've been using the Internet with about 20 regular email correspondents, hanging out mainly on uk.music.rave, uk.rec.sheds and the British Win95 newsgroups and generally learning about all aspects of the Net.

Having covered about 1.5 million miles while I was a field engineer I'm not much into cars now and can't really justify running one of my own so I share my mum's A-reg Astra which has only 15,000 genuine miles on the clock - we don't use it an awful lot! I used to be into motorbikes but they're so expensive to buy and insure now that I couldn't afford to keep one. My best bike was a brand new Honda VFR750F, a beautiful red mean-machine which could out-accelerate most 4 wheeled vehicles (0-60 in 3.5 secs!) and only ran out of steam at 155mph (so I'm told, officer! ;-) Good fun!

There you are then, warts and all! Please don't hesitate to drop me a line if you've found anything interesting here, I'm always pleased to make new friends and acquaintances and would love any feedback on these pages and what you've read.

All the best,

(Correct as of September 1997)
