Club IQ, 13-21 Baldwin Street, Bristol

Club IQ started life as the Gaumont cinema back in the days of my youth and was converted to a nightclub, oh, about 20 years ago. It was a 'Ritzy' for many years but in September '96 they changed the name to 'Club IQ', heralding the change in policy from it being a mainstream disco to a more specialised dance club (or, as they said on the flyer, "A new image, a new beginning").

I originally added this club to the listings here because they started running a night called 'Indulge' on Fridays which was run by the Karanga crew and hosted many of the big name house DJs and even a few national tours such as the 1996 Cream and Miss Moneypenny's tours. However, with the change of name they dropped 'Indulge' and revamped their nights which are currently as follows:

  • Tuesday - "Loaded - A night geared to the student market"

  • Thursday - "Decades Of Dance" - combining all types of dance music and classic chart hits.

  • Friday - "Handbag Heaven" - Uplifting vocal house and garage (with a dress code: "Class, nothing less"). 9:30pm to 2:30am

  • Saturday - "Divine" - Commercial dance, club classics plus some soul & swing. Dress code: "No effort, no entry". 9pm to 3am
If asked, I'd probably place the "Handbag Heaven" night as a lighter version of Saturday night at Lakota (the others are still basically 'disco') so if you're interested in trying something a bit harder than an ordinary 'mainstream' club but aren't ready for full-on Hard House and Trance, this could be worth a try.
